Project Global Gratitude is dedicated to uniting fans worldwide in an effort to give thanks and show appreciation to the cast and crew of Smallville . Together we hope to self-publish three books, one in dedication to Erica Durance, a second in dedication to Tom Welling, and third in dedication to the entire Smallville cast and crew.We are inviting and encouraging all DI members and fans of Erica Durance, Tom Welling, and the show in general from different online forums and websites to participate in this project. We need as much help in completing these books as possible.

    Immediate Goal and Main Priority

Our immediate goal is to have between 200-300 participants for this project. Our current participation level is at 70 participants. This means that we require a lot more members to participate. In addition, to this goal, our main project priority at this moment is the appreciation letters. We need more of them. The original deadline for the letters was December 21st, but that deadline has now been pushed to January 18, 2010.

The above deadline gives us over a month *more* to recruit more members and to receive approximately 300+ letters. However, as previously mentioned, we do not want to wait until the last minute to turn in our letters. If this project is going to work we're going to need more letters as soon as possible to know if we will reach our goal or not. Keep in mind that reaching our goal of letters is essential to completing the books and completing this project. In essence, without letters we don't have much of a project.

So please, if you have 15-20 minutes to write a simple letter of gratitude, please do so. If you can write more than 1 letter then we also encourage that. There is no limit to how many letters you can write as you can send them to ED, TW, and any of the other cast and crew.

We would like to go from NO MAIL... Book Layout Mailboxempty...to A LOT OF MAIL...Book Layout Mailboxhappy so if you can help us please do so!
The email to send your letters is: DI.AppreciationLetters@Gmail.com

    New Project Model

In an effort to re-energize this project, we are opening this new thread and remodeling the original concept of the books in order to allow more input from the project participants and hopefully motivate more people to join and help make this project a success.

Original Book Layout: Our original book layout consisted of 8 parts.
    I. Front Cover
    II. Dedication Page
    III. Foreword
    IV. Table of Contents
    V. Appreciation Letters (*)
    VI. Thank You Page
    VII. Book Index
    VIII. Back Cover

Modified Book Layout: Our new book layout consists of approximately 12 parts, with an opening to add more sections.

    I. Front Cover
    II. Dedication Page
    III. Foreword
    IV. Table of Contents
    V. Question and Answer Session (with the Fans)
    VI. Appreciation Letters (*)
VII. Positive Quotes (from official sources)
    VIII. Recognition/Achievement List
IX. Poetry Section (Classic style, Acronyms poetry, etc)
    X. 101 Reasons Why We Love…(Erica, Tom, Smallville)
    XI. Epilogue and Acknowledgements
    XII. Book Index
    XIII. Back Cover

At this time we are seeking input from DI members (and all Lois and Clark fans from any and all internet forums and websites) on ALL sections of the book.

*As always the most important part of the book will be the letters. The word range for the letters is approximately 400-1,000 words. If you write a slightly shorter or slightly longer letter, they will still be accepted. With the letters we will try to be as flexible as possible in order to get to our goal of 300 letters. Remember that we want to have as many letters as possible. In fact, if you overflow us with letters we'll be extremely happy!

We understand that you have busy lives and that this project is taking place between holidays

    Book Layout Smiley-computer005

In short, you have a life. I understand all that because I have a life, too, a very busy very demanding one and it's tough to add more to your plate when you already have a pretty full one. So, we're not asking you to dedicate hours and hours to the project, but simply to spend a few minutes writing a minimum of one letter.

Right now, our forum is composed over over 6,400 members. Out of those members only 70 have enlisted. I have to believe that there are more of the 6,300+ members who have a few minutes of time to write at least one letter. And that is all we need, the bare minimum this project needs is that, more people doing just a little each.

If you are able to do MORE for the project, of course, we'd love that, but to make this project successful we need a lot of people (200-300) just doing one simple thing, writing a minimum of 1 letter.

If you need help with the letters, we'll help you. We can edit your letters, translate your letters (currently this is for Spanish letters only, but we may offer the service for other languages later on), and we can provide other type of support as well.

At this point we just want to be bathing in letters!
    Book Layout Smiley-bounce017

And we want help from people all around the world!

Secondary Project Details Along with these important matters of writing letters and increasing our participation level, we also want to touch upon a few other related matters.

    Donations Book Layout 2c
If you are financially able to contribute to our project, please let us know. We have a goal set at raising approximately $800. Our current donation total is a little over $500. To contribute, email Daphne at: tenshinochi@yahoo.com (also the donation’s PayPal address).

    Gifts
Along with the books we are also sending a few complimentary items, with the option to add more depending on our raised donations. Our current gift selection is listed briefly below with a more detailed description on the second page of this thread.

    Graphic Artists
At this moment we are also seeking the help of any person with a talent in graphic arts to help with a few things. At the top of our list being someone who can develop a simple yet creative layout for one or more of the added book sections listed above.

You’ll see one post dedicated to each section below, elaborating on the section and giving examples of what type of help me need. Additionally, if anyone has any ideas on other sections we can add to the book, please post them here. The idea behind the books is to make them as comprehensive and as fun as possible—if you have any creative ideas that are easy for our members to complete and that you would imagine Erica, Tom, and SV related cast and crew would enjoy reading, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

We’re a very friendly forum and we are welcoming any and all suggestions. What will make this project succeed is each person’s willingness to collaborate and join in with work an

    Letter Writing Guide

Keeping in mind that the majority of those who decide to participate in this project will not have too much experience writing letters, below is a simple writing guide.

Most letters have the following layout:

    Book Layout Ffriendlyletter

    Heading
The heading is written in the upper-right hand corner of the page and includes the writer’s address and date. For the purpose of this project, we will elect to go with general locations instead of specific addresses.
    Texas, United States
    November 23, 2009

    Greeting
Each letter will instead begin with the greeting or a short salutation. The most common greeting is “Dear” followed by the person’s name.
    Dear Erica Durance,
However, since this will be an informal, friendly letter you can also elect to begin with something less formal such as, “Hello!” or “Greetings!” The deciding factor in how you begin your letter will ultimately lie on what you feel most comfortable with.

    Body
Here’s the fun part of the letter! Now you can write your letter in one paragraph or break it into multiple paragraphs, with each paragraph being assigned its own topic or idea. Since the hardest part of writing is usually starting, I’ve drafted up some sample starting sentences that you can play around with:

I wanted to express my sincerest gratitude for all the work you do on Smallville…

Thank you for taking such good care of my favorite characters…

Magical. Every time you’re on my television, it’s magical…

Words cannot accurately express how much I have fallen in love with your characterization of…

Smallville has been on the air for nine years and it is still my favorite show…

You are my generation’s (Lois Lane / Clark Kent)…and for that I have to say thank you…

I have been a faithful fan of the Superman series since I was a small child…

You capture the voices of my favorite characters so well…

Clark Kent is such an inspiring character. Thank you for keeping him alive for this generation through your work…

The stories you weave on Smallville are nothing short of amazing…

You would continue your body by elaborating on any idea that you start with. If, for example, you begin in a general sense by saying that “I wanted to express my sincerest gratitude for all the work you do on Smallville…” you would continue by elaborating on what you mean. What exactly are you most grateful for? If this is a letter being addressed a writer, you may want to mention actual episode titles.

To help with this, you will find a “Smallville Cast and Crew Guide” that has the names of all important Season 8 & 9 staff and crew members at the end of this message.

If you do mention a particular episode, you can also make your letter more meaningful by quoting a line from the episode. If this is a letter to a director, you can not only mention an episode title but also elaborate on what about their work stands out. Is it the editing of an episode, the pacing, or the special effects?

    Dear Glen Winter,
I wanted to express my sincerest gratitude for all the work you do on Smallville. You have directed my two favorite episodes of the series, “Idol” and “Committed”. What I love most about your direction is the fresh, modern, and cinematic feel you give to each episode…

    Closing
Just as there are a variety of different ways to start a letter, there are a variety of different ways to conclude a letter. The most common closing for a friendly letter is “Sincerely.”
    Sincerely,
However, there are other closing statements you can make, such as:

“With deepest gratitude,” “With great appreciation,” “Yours Truly,” “Yours Respectfully,” Warm Regards,” “Kind Wishes,” …and there are some which are a bit more fun to use, such as, “Shine On,” “Lots of Love,” “Rock On,” “Stay Talented,” “Stay Beautiful,” etc.

    Signatures
You can sign your letters with your full name, your user name, or any other name of your choosing.
    Helio
If you want to add a “real” signature to your letter, there are two options available. (1) You may hand sign a paper, scan it and send it to us electronically or (2) you may use a program like Photoshop to digitally create a signature and then send that to us electronically as well. A third option may be to use a fancy or curvy font from a website like www.dafont.com that looks like a signature.

    \S/

    Additional Tips
Below are some additional suggestions drafted by Jade.

    Formatting
The best format for writing letters is to keep it simple. Some formatting is fine, but you don't want to make the letters too busy because that can actually make them harder to read. Remember, content is more important than making it "pretty" by using colors, strange fonts, etc.

Bear in mind that there will be a lot of letters coming in (we hope!). Try to keep them as easy to read as possible. Put an extra space between paragraphs (like I'm doing here). We will edit the submissions to an extent, but if everyone does their best it will help a lot.

    Common Grammar Mistakes

    It's/its
"It's" is a contraction for "it is." Its is possessive.

"It's great to see you guys on Smallville! The show's doing great after its move to Friday nights!"

    Their/there/they're
"Their" is possessive. "They're" is a contraction for "they are."

"There are some great things going on this season; I'm glad the showrunners are finally going there with the Lois and Clark relationship!

About Lois and Clark...they're going to stay together, I hope?

I think their relationship is the best on the show!"

    You're/your
"You're" is a contraction. "Your" is possessive.

"You're both doing a great job; I love your work on Smallville!"

Content: Suggestions for what you can write about

    * What got you into Smallville? Why do you still watch after all these years?

    * What's your favorite Clark/Lois/Clois scene and why?

    * Why do you ship Clois and, more specifically, why SMALLVILLE'S Lois and Clark?

    * Has Smallville had an impact on your life in some way - have you met new people and made new friends because of a love of Smallville?

    * What is your favorite moment from the series to date?

    * Did the show get you into writing? Acting? Drawing? How has it impacted you creatively?

    Project Questions and Answers

Based on some of the questions posted here and sent to my personal inbox, I’ve decided to type out a short “Q&A section” for the project to answer the most common questions about this project.

    1. Where do I send the letters to, and who do I tell?
All letters should be sent to the following email address: DI.AppreciationLetters@Gmail.com No one needs to be specifically addressed when you send out your letters although it would be nice to send out each letter in a separate email. So, for example, if you are sending two letters, one to Tom Welling and a second to Erica Durance, it would be easier for sorting purposes to send out one email (with a title such as “Tom Welling Appreciation Letter”) and then a separate email for your second letter (with a title such as “Erica Durance Appreciation Letter”).

    2. Do non-DI members need to join DI to participate?
Absolutely not. Although it would be nice for any pro-Lois/Clark fans to join DI, it is not a prerequisite to participate in this project. To advertise the project you can post our website link and maybe our promotional video.

    3. What is the word count limit for the letters?
The word count range is 400 – 1,500 words. If you write a little less or a little more than the minimum or the maximum we'll try to be as flexible as possible and still receive your letter as long as the content is acceptable.

    4. Is there a limit to the number of letters that can be submitted?
There is NO limit. We would love to have as many letters as possible from every individual. The only thing we will not accept are multiple letters from one person going to the same person. For example, one person sending Tom Welling 5 letters would not be acceptable. But one person sending 1 letter to Tom, 1 letter to Erica, 1 letter to Brian Peterson, 1 letter to Kelly Souders, and 1 letter to Justin Hartley is acceptable.

    5. Will you be accepting all letters?
All letters will be considered and most likely accepted with the exception of any letters that contain profanity or any type of negativity towards TW, ED or the SV writers and staff. Remember that the purpose of this project is to show our appreciation. The series is not perfect and I know there is definitely room for criticism, but this project is not the place for anyone to take up a soap box and criticize the show.

    6. How exactly will the letters be edited?
The letters will be lightly edited and revised if needed. Mostly what the editors will do is look for any glaring errors, although they do reserve the right to alter sentence structure in extreme cases in order to clarify the letter’s main message. This will be left up to the discretion of the individual editor. Our main goal while editing will be to keep the letter as

    7. Are members allowed to make project suggestions?
Yes, at this point we do need input from as many participants as possible on the book layout, the question and answer session, and other parts of this project. If you have any ideas, please feel free to share them.

    8. Who can donate and how can we donate?
Anyone with an online paypal account can donate (that means both US or international participants). The person who you will be sending your money to will be Daphne (DI Username: Kawarimi), who helped us previously on our OWC and TW/ED appreciation projects. Her email address is: tenshinochi@yahoo.com

    9. Concerning places to advertise, which places are off-limits and which places do we want to focus on?
No place is off limits but we do ask that members check forum rules before posting. The main person in charge of recruiting more participants is Manu. She has a comprehensive list of places to post. Her DI username is: Aleunam.

    10. The writers are on Twitter. Is THAT place off limits?
Due to the urgency of attacting as many people to our project Twitter is no longer off limits. We know have a project site at Twitter run by Gill. So feel free to follow us there and to advertise that link to others. All we ask is that you please NOT send any messages to @SV_Writers about our project.
